Kannalife Sciences Works to Minimize NFL’s CTE Epidemic
Former All-Pro NFL kicker and Kannalife™ Sciences spokesperson Nick Lowery understands the very real consequences of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). He has seen his friends and colleagues in the NFL suffer from its effects. That is what drives him to educate the American public and his fellow football players about CTE and CBD’s potential role in this issue.
UPI took up this story this week with their article, “Ex-NFL star working on ‘intercellular’ helmet to curb concussions, CTE”. Lowery was interviewed as part of this article to provide insight into how CTE affects former and active NFL players and how Kannalife™ is exploring ways to use CBD to create a treatment option.
“How can we allow this to happen? And it’s not because football is the worst sport. It’s the best sport … but the bottom line is how can we let this happen to future Mike Websters,” Lowery told UPI. “What can we do to make sure this doesn’t happen and preserve this game? Who are the stewards of the game if it’s not us?”
Kannalife™ Sciences is working under its exclusive licenses from the National Institutes of Health for the commercialization of U.S. Patent #6,630,507, “Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants” to create an FDA approved cannabinoid-based treatment for CTE. With this goal in mind, the company has developed a synthetic CBD-like molecule, KLS-13019, which is 50 times more potent and 400 times less toxic than naturally occurring CBD.
“What’s hurting the game is simply not figuring out how we reduce the impact of concussions and these hits that are part of football … There is very consistent and powerful evidence that we are on the right track,” Lowery said of the work being done by Kannalife™.
