Mexico is making major, international headlines today as Cofepris, the Mexican Health Department, approved the first permits in Mexico’s history allowing the import of cannabidiol (CBD) hemp oil into the country. Both permits were granted to Alina and Maria Paula, two young girls suffering from epilepsy.

Abelardo Maldonado, Alina’s father, was present at Cofepris today to receive the permit in person. News outlets like Televisa, TV Azteca, Milenio TV, CNN Mexico, and the Associated Press were all there to document this historic moment.

Domestic media outlets have also taken notice of our efforts in Mexico and throughout Latin America, with Reuters publishing an update on our expansion into Mexico along with our growing distribution in Brazil.

Medical Marijuana Inc.’s presence in Mexico will be similar to the one we’ve already established in Brazil, where patients are able to import Real Scientific Hemp Oil™ (RSHO™) for approved medical conditions with a valid prescription. All indications point towards Mexico becoming a major market opportunity as it has a population of 120 million individuals.

“Mexico represents a $1 billion to $2 billion opportunity in terms of cumulative revenue over the next 10 years,” says Stuart W. Titus, PhD and CEO of Medical Marijuana Inc. “It is a tremendous honor for both Medical Marijuana, Inc. and HempMeds® Mexico to be the pioneers for the cannabis revolution taking place in Mexico.”

As stated by Cofepris, the first products Alina and Maria Paula will have access to is a variety of RSHO™, RSHO-X™, available to them via Medical Marijuana Inc.’s international distribution branch HempMeds® Mexico. RSHO-X™ contains no THC, only CBD.

There are currently other companies eyeing a potential entry into the Mexican ecosystem, but Medical Marijuana Inc. has been there for months supporting local debates, hosting events, and laying the groundwork for this decision. Further, as more permits are allowed in the future, we’ll be the ones ensuring that families who need access to CBD hemp oil get it.

We owe a lot of our success in Mexico to our partner, the Por Grace Por Todos Foundation, and people like Alina’s family members who have helped make this dream a reality.
